FAQ - Hydroquinone Serum - Frequently Asked Questions

  • What color should the serum be?
The serum should be clear to light amber. It should not be very dark at all.
  • Some people said it made their dark spots darker- at least when they first used it. Why do you think thats so? Whats causing it(for hyperpigmentation)
In regards to the spots appearing darker at first, what happens is the salicylic and kojic acid cause cell turnover and what people are seeing is dead skin which will appear darker on the skin until it is sloughed off. If skin appears to be peeling, that is likely the dead skin sloughing off. We have had experience with this before and after the skin sloughed off the dark spots were much lighter. There is a process which leads to great results, but this serum must have time to work – typically around 4 weeks.
  • Does it work on the bleaching or lightening skin color?
This product is designed to fade dark spots, hyperpigmentation and melasma rather than bleach or whiten ones’ skin. True skin bleaching would require a doctors’ prescription as that strength can't be sold over the counter.
  • Has anyone else experienced a huge amount of flaking skin? i exfoliate every day now and use a facial oil and still cant control it. any tips?
The salicylic and kojic acid cause cell turnover and what you might be seeing is dead skin sloughing off. We have had experience with this before and after the skin sloughed off the dark spots were much lighter. If you have sensitive skin, this could also be a little irritation. We recommend starting out using this serum once every other night. If the flaking has lessened, you can work your way up to daily usage. You will want to be sure you are using a high quality, nourishing moisturizer as well. The daily exfoliating could also be irritating your skin further. You could try gently rubbing your faces with a wet wash cloth to remove the flaking skin and lightly exfoliating every third day.

  • Will the product still work if you use a moisturizer on top of product?
Yes, in fact we recommend using a moisturizer if the serum is drying for some skin types.
  • Can I use this in the morning and my Retinol cream during the night?
You can absolutely use this serum in the morning and your retinol cream at night. Retinol actually boosts the effects of hydroquinone. That being said, everyone's skin is different, so I recommend starting out with a small spot test of our product to make sure you do not have any irritation. This serum is very potent which allows it to produce results quickly, but it can also be drying for people with sensitive skin. You will want to be sure you are using a high quality, nourishing moisturizer and always wearing SPF during the day. If it seems like too much using both of the products daily, you can try lessening one of them to every other day and work your way up to daily use.
  • Many sites online say that products with Hydroquinone have mercury in them. I just want to check and make sure that isn't the case here. Thanks!
Our serum definitely does NOT contain mercury. I understand your concern as there are a lot of articles out there about this. I would strongly advise against using any hydroquinone products from outside the United States. The concern is that some of these products contain mercury. These products are not regulated by the FDA or any other credible agency. Our product is made here in the USA, is regulated by the FDA and does not contain mercury.
  • Is this oil-free? My skin breaks out with any oil-based topical. Thanks.
Yes, our serum is oil free.
  • Can I use this while also using an at home chemical peel?
Depending on the strength of the peel, you'll need to wait at least 2 weeks after the peel before using hydroquinone.
  • Will this product cause darker pigmentation when the product is stopped? I know it's a common side effect of hydroquinone. Have you done any testing?
With our serum the salicylic and kojic acid cause cell turnover which can cause the spots to appear darker at first. This is dead skin which will appear darker on the skin until it is sloughed off. We have had experience with this before and after the skin sloughed off the dark spots were much lighter.
To explain hydroquinone a little further, hydroquinone works by inhibiting tyrosinase, which is necessary for melanin production. It is believed that with extended hydroquinone use, the skin will compensate by increasing tyrosinase. This would cause the skin to become resistant to the effects of hydroquinone. When the skin becomes resistant to the effects of hydroquinone it will quit improving the hyper pigmentation. To prevent building resistance, it is not recommended to continue use for extended periods of time without cycling off. It is usually recommended to cycle off hydroquinone after about 2-6 months. If needed, hydroquinone may be resumed after about 1-2 months off. If you stop hydroquinone “cold turkey”, there is a risk of rebound pigmentation. To prevent rebound pigmentation, it is generally recommended to transition your skin off. Dark spots can come back, but this usually takes quite some time and you can begin using hydroquinone again. Protecting your face from the sun can also help reduce the chances of dark spots reappearing.
  • Hi, does this help against acne? I am 29 years old and I have acne again, I hate it and does this help agains marks and spots?
This should definitely help lighten acne spots. This serum is not tested for acne treatment, however many users have said it helped with their acne. This is most likely the salicylic and azelaic acids helping to reduce it.
  • It is stated that spots become darker before fading. How long does the darker period last?
While some users have spots appear darker at first others do not experience this at all. It is hard to give an exact time because everyone's skin is different. To explain how the product works a little more, salicylic and kojic acid cause cell turnover which can cause spots to appear darker at first. We have had experience with this before and after the skin sloughed off the dark spots were much lighter. If you do experience this you could try discontinuing the serum temporarily and using an exfoliant a few days later to help slough off the dead skin. You should start to see results after 4-6 weeks of using this serum. Drinking plenty of water promotes skin renewal as well and can help speed up the process.
  • Can I use it on eyes, but in a small part? I have pigmentation in this area.
The skin around your eyes is much thinner and likely more sensitive than the rest of your skin. This product has not been tested and is not intended for the eye area. If the spots are closer to the cheekbone or temple, we recommend doing a very small spot test in the area to make sure you do not experience any irritation. A slight tingling sensation is normal, but it should subside. You will also want to pair a high quality, nourishing moisturizer with this product and be sure to use SPF when in the sun. You could also start out using the serum once every other day and working your way up to daily use if it seems too strong for such frequent use in this area.
  • I'm looking for something to fade a few spots on my hands. I'm a nurse so I wondered if I should use this at night due to the constant hand washing.
Yes, it's recommended to apply this product at night, especially if you're washing your hands throughout the day.
  • Does this help with undereye circle lightening?
This serum is for hyperpigmentation and melasma. I do not think it would be the right product for dark under eye circles. I would recommend using an eye gel, drinking plenty of water and getting adequate sleep. We also always recommend wearing SPF in the sun.
  • Can I use this with retinol cream?
Yes, you definitely can! Retinol actually boosts the effects of hydroquinone. You will want to be sure to use a high quality, nourishing moisturizer as well.
  • Would this work on tummytuck scars?
Hello. This hasn't been tested to treat scars but rather it's proven to fade dark spots and hyperpigmentation. Hydroquinone does NOT work well for raised or red scars.
  • Does this work on very dark skin? I have a small mark on my nose post acne, I picked at before.
We have a few reviews in which the reviewers specifically mentioned having dark skin and they had great results from this serum. It will help with post acne spots. We always recommend doing a small spot test to make sure it works well with your skin.
  • Can this be used on lips?
This serum has not been tested for use on the lips and we do not recommend it. This skin is much more sensitive and you would not want to ingest it. It can be used on the skin around the lips, but not directly on the lips.
  • How's the scent on this? I know that's an odd question, but I've purchased other hydroquinone products before and the perfumey scent kills me!
We do not add any fragrance to our product. The potent mixture of the ingredients may have a slight medicinal smell.
  • What are the active and inactive ingredients?
The active ingredients are: Hydroquinone, Kojic Acid, Azelaic Acid, Lactic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Vitamin C.
The inactive ingredients are: Proplylene Glycol, Alcohol Denat, Witch Hazel, Water, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose, Sodium Hydroxide
  • Where is this product made from?
This product is made in the USA.
  • Is this used in conjunction with a moisturizer, and can I use with hyaluronic serum? If so, which do I put on first?
We recommend using the Ultra-Potent Brightening Serum first. Please allow time for this to fully dry. You can then use the hyaluronic serum and moisturizer last.
  • Can guys use this product?
    Yes, absolutely!
  • Could this help wit getting rid of dark underarms?
This serum has not been tested for the underarm area. This skin is thinner and most likely more sensitive, so if you do decide to try it I would recommend a small spot test to make sure you have no irritation.
  • I have discoloration (darker spot) above my lip due to drinking lemon tea prior to tanning. Will this serum help lighten my spot above my lip?
This serum is truly for melasma and hyperpigmentation. It has not been tested for the exact issue you are explaining; however, it could help. I was doing some research and I found an article from the Today Show saying hydroquinone can help with this. This was posted June 29, 2016 entitled "How lime juice can lead to severe burns - and what to do about it" if you would like to search for it. I’ve included the link below:

If you would like to give it a try and do not achieve the results you are looking for please contact us directly and we'll be happy to make it right. Also, dark spots can come back, but this usually takes quite some time. If you are tanning, this might cause the dark spot to come back more quickly. Protecting your face from the sun can reduce the chances of dark spots reappearing so we always recommend using SPF in the sun. This serum can also make you more sensitive to sunlight so you will want to be careful.
We also recommend doing a small spot test to make sure you do not have any irritation and pairing a high quality, nourishing moisturizer with this product.
